Okay, it’s a little egotistical to say we are “Award-Winning” anything. We won some contests in the past, but we are not the best anything. So, I just want to get that out there. However, I am seeking an executive producer. There is money in Jacksonville. There are people out there that invest in the film community. I hear about it and I know people that have had their shot with other people’s money.
I am waiting patiently for my shot to prove the worth of Upside Down Creative Media. Everything I have produced has been by myself. 99% of the material you’ve watched from us has been a one man production. In the past, I am the one to write (or co-write), produce, direct, shoot, run sound, set lighting, edit, and promote/market our sketches and short films. I have spent thousands of dollars on my own equipment (some of which is 7-8 years old and falling apart.)
On set, I will literally be doing 5 jobs at the same time, just to make sure I get the work as close to my vision as possible.
I hate it. I need help. I just want to direct. I want someone else to produce the material. I want someone else to operate the cameras. I want someone else to run sound. I want someone else to set lights. I want someone else to edit. I want someone else to market it. I am exhausted.
Let me add to this by saying I am not the sole talent here at Upside Down Creative Media. I couldn’t have done any of this without Rob. I say that over and over, every time I write one of these rants about where we are. His talent and acting may require less commitment and time, but it is equally as valuable as everything I do. That’s just the circumstance. We have also been fortunate to work with other people in Jacksonville, which we are continually grateful for. We know this will grow, but having an executive producer get involved would expedite that process for us.
I do believe our work suffers because I’m doing everything on the production side. I believe my strength lies in directing. I already have the ability to see the project as it unfolds. I just believe everything else suffers. I miss focus on certain shots, because I’m more focused on directing the actor. Or lighting is inconsistent from shot to shot, because again… I’m worried about delivering good sound. Or sound suffers, because I forgot to hit record on the field mixer because I’m balancing a million other things at once.
The one place I never pull back on though is directing. While many of our short films and sketches don’t have the highest quality both visually and audibly, I believe our work does manage to “get the message across.” Simply put, we make people laugh.
I want to continue to do that, but on a grander scale. I need someone to invest in us. I won’t stop doing this stuff until my 7 year old T3i stops functioning, but it sure would be nice to have someone invest so we can finally start working on our first feature film.
If there is one thing about me, it’s that I don’t give up. I’m almost 35. I started directing when I was 28. I have a lot of learning to do, but I know I am at a prime-time in my age and experience to create something unique. I just need an executive producer in North Florida or Jacksonville to give me a shot.
